What is an Electromechanician/ Millwright is a craftsman or specialized tradesman.
They install, maintain and repair stationery industrial machinery and mechanical equipment.
They may work on production machines, electrically driven machines and/ or control gear.
Millwrights usually work in manufacturing section of factories, government agencies, Eskom, Sasol and large corporations, but thy can also work for themselves.
What does an Electromechanician/ Millwright do?
- Interpreting drawings
- Dismantling machines or electrical motors to trace faults
- Making temporary repairs while part is being ordered/ made
- Keeping up to date with new components is essential
- Checking wiring to determine power consumption
- Assembling, fitting and installing of new machinery
- Repairing and lubricating machines
- Signaling to crane operator to lower basic assembly units to bed plate.

Workplace Experience
The learner is exposed to relevant equipment in the workplace during his 54 weeks plant training .
The theory must also be consolidated with the practical.
The daily tasks to be carried out by the learner (together with an artisan) will be determined by the first fine supervisor ; but the supervisor must also allow certain time for the tasks to be completed by the learner as considered to be PREREQUISITE for the writing of the trade test.
The mentor will sign off a task in his/ her logbook when the learner has been tested and has mastered the tasks. All applicable modules must be completed and signed off before the trade test is done.
Institutional training
During a one week induction training session learners will receive orientation in their new leaning environment. They will also learn how to study and be made aware of all relevant safety aspects of the working environment.
In addition to the above the duration of institutional training is 35 weeks. During these 35 weeks we will focus on their skills, their understanding of the subject as well as knowledge required to be declared competent as diesel/ motor mechanic
A further one week will be used to equip learners with life skills to ensure their competitive advantage in the working environment.

How do I become a Millwright?
The period of study involves both practical and theoretical training. Once qualified, there are many career opportunities for millwright in South Africa.
Apprenticeships or training for a specific period of time allows you to write a trade test, if successful you will be qualified as an artisan.
The pratical millwright course is designed for beginners and experiences millwright. On completion of this course, you will receive a certificate of competence, which is recognized in the market place.
Requirement
Grade 10 (N1) with Mathematics and Science.
Trainees not entering into an apprenticeship contract can also benefit from these accredited courses, as it reduces their minimum training period to 18 months and, subject to the approval of their training records, they too will qualify to write their trade test.
